Entering time in the calendar affects the effort in a strange manner..

I have come across the following issue when using calendars in Microsoft Project

Scenario 1:

Planned absence entered into resource calendar - scheduled work in work plan reduced and moved to the end of the project (this is how I would like the plans to behave).

Scenario 2:

Public holiday entered into enterprise calendar - scheduled work in work plan reduced and recalculated over 3 weeks of the project around the time the public holiday occurs

Scenario 3:

Planned absence entered into resource calendar - scheduled work reduced and moved back to the start of the project

The inconsistencies I am seeing are within one work plan: NCEE UK Power Networks FY14 using fixed tasks not effort driven and in auto schedule mode. I am also using resources with different enterprise calendars but I don't think this should cause a problem.
